Looking for work in another country, like New Zealand or anywhere else, can feel like a lot at first. The good news is that a few simple habits early on save you a lot of wasted effort later. Here are five I always come back to.

Do your research first

Look closely at the countries you are drawn to. Get a feel for the job market, and find the roles that fit both your skills and the kind of visa you are likely to qualify for. A little homework here stops you chasing jobs you cannot take.

Build your network

Reach out to people who have already worked abroad, especially in the country you have in mind. Their first hand experience is worth more than almost anything you will read online, and they often know about roles before they are posted.

Put together a strong application

Make your application easy to say yes to. A clear, well written CV, a cover letter that speaks to the actual role, and any documents that back up your skills and experience. Match it to each job rather than sending the same thing everywhere.

Get ready for interviews

Learn about the company and the role before you sit down with them. Practise your answers to the usual questions out loud. It builds your confidence and helps you come across the way you want to.

Tidy up your LinkedIn

Keep your LinkedIn current and clear. Show what you are good at, and slowly grow your connections with people in your field and in the countries you are aiming for. A lot of overseas hiring starts there.

Do these five things and you have given yourself a real head start on finding work overseas, in New Zealand or beyond.

If you would like help working out which visa fits your plans, get in touch. I would be glad to help.

Warmly, Suzanne
