Residence, a household
decision, not a single form.

Most residence cases involve more than one person. A partner, a child, a parent, each with their own paperwork, their own clock, their own visa logic. I work residence cases as a household plan: which member of the family is the right anchor for the application, in what sequence, on which side of the Tasman.

Before the form

One application, whole family in view.

Residence applications usually carry dependents. A spouse, a child still at school, a parent who is moving with you, a partner already on a different visa. Each adds documentation, processing time, and decisions that should be made together, not in the order the forms suggest.

I plan the household first: who applies, who is included as a dependent, who needs a separate visa, what each person's pathway looks like five years out. The form-filling is the last twenty percent of the work.

AU

Australian residence pathways

Australia has many routes; these are the ones I work on most. Skilled-stream residence is covered on the work visas page (subclasses 186, 189, 190, 191). Below are the family and long-stay routes.

Partner visa, offshore · subclasses 309 → 100

Partner visa applied for from outside Australia.

The route for partners of an Australian who are applying from overseas. It suits couples who can show a genuine, continuing relationship and want to settle in Australia together. I help you work out whether this is the right fit for your situation and what evidence your case needs. The current conditions sit with Home Affairs and keep shifting, so I point you to the live source: Home Affairs visa finder.

Partner visa, onshore · subclasses 820 → 801

Partner visa applied for from inside Australia.

The onshore equivalent, for partners of an Australian who are already in the country on another visa. It suits couples settled here who want to move toward permanent residence together. I help you work out whether this is the right path and how your relationship evidence stacks up. The current conditions sit with Home Affairs and keep shifting, so I point you to the live source: Home Affairs visa finder.

Contributory Parent visa · subclass 143

Permanent residence for parents, contributory stream.

A permanent residence route for parents joining an adult child settled in Australia. It suits families who want the parent here for good and are weighing it against the temporary 870 option. I help you work out which parent route actually fits your family and timeline. The current conditions sit with Home Affairs and keep shifting, so I point you to the live source: Home Affairs visa finder.

Sponsored Parent visa, temporary · subclass 870

Long-term temporary stay for parents.

A long-stay temporary visa for parents who want to live in Australia without committing to permanent residence, or while waiting on it. It suits families where an adult child here can sponsor, and where the permanent parent wait would be too long. I help you work out whether this is the right answer for now. The current conditions sit with Home Affairs and keep shifting, so I point you to the live source: Home Affairs visa finder.

Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) · subclass 191

Permanent residence for regional skilled visa holders.

The permanent landing for people who took a regional skilled route and have lived and worked in regional Australia. It suits those who are ready to move from a regional provisional visa to full permanent residence. I help you work out whether you are on track and when to lodge. The current conditions sit with Home Affairs and keep shifting, so I point you to the live source: Home Affairs visa finder.

How I work on a residence case

Household first, form last.

A residence case starts with a sketch of everyone moving and their dates. Then the question of which family member should anchor the application, in which country, on which timeline. The form-filling waits until that household plan is settled.

  • Household map first, who applies, who is included, who needs a separate visa.
  • Realistic timelines for each member, including the parent and the partner.
  • Relationship-evidence audit before any partner-visa lodgement.
  • Health and character requirements sequenced so they do not hold up the case.
  • Bridging-visa strategy for onshore applicants, kept current as conditions change.
Where I'll push back

Honest about residence.

A few patterns repeat in residence enquiries that I will not pretend are simple, and a couple I will not take on at all.

  • "We just got together" partner cases, the evidence test is real, and an early lodgement risks refusal.
  • Parent visas where the balance-of-family picture is tight, sometimes the answer is the 870, not the 143.
  • Onshore changes of plan that involve overstaying, speak to a migration lawyer first.
  • Cases that look like residence but are really citizenship-by-descent, different track.
★★★★★ On a residence case

I worked with TasmanVisa and Suzanne for several months on my New Zealand Straight to Residence Visa. Suzanne was extremely helpful throughout the entire process and provided clear, step-by-step guidance for the application.

Cristian Filimon · September 2025 · Trustpilot Read this review in full →

"Residence is the move with the longest tail, children, partner, parents, and the small decisions that ripple for years. Plan it as a household. Lodge it in the order that protects everyone."

Tell me who is moving, where they are now, and any deadlines. I will sketch the realistic shape of the next eighteen months.
